What agents can learn from athletes about how to avoid burnout.

Do you ever feel burned out as a real estate agent? This is a common feeling, and I want to help you avoid it. To do that, I’m going to compare real estate agents to professional athletes. Both groups need to maintain a high level of intensity and focus to be successful, so there’s a lot we can learn from their practices.

Athletes train incredibly hard to stay in shape and perform at their best, just like agents, but they don’t work as hard as they can all of the time—no one can do that sustainably. There are many times when athletes are barely pushing themselves and their workout is enjoyable. This makes them feel like they can go on forever.

Scientists studied professional athletes and found three key facts. They never missed a workout, avoided burnout at all costs, and broke their workouts into three classes, doing light-intensity workouts more than 85% of the time. The key here is that athletes understand that success is a slow progression. Building strength and skill takes time.

This is how we should approach our real estate business. The problem is that most real estate agents don’t want to wait—they want success now. We should be working hard, but not so hard that we burn ourselves out. We should enjoy the process and always feel like we can do more because we can.

“Top athletes and agents know that building skill takes time.”

Over time, the low intensity improves your overall limits at medium and higher intensities. The key is to find that delicate balance between working hard and having fun. When you enjoy what you do, it doesn’t feel like work at all.

The top agents in North America generate leads, train, prospect, and follow up at a lower intensity so that they can do it longer and sustainably. These top agents are calm, collected, and they love what they do. Where will your life be in one year if you start practicing this today?
